School Seminars

Summer, July 2011

Middle School Morning Group:  Writing & Reading Workshop, 9:30-12pm, M-Th in July

Participants strengthen essential critical thinking skills for ages 11-14.  This summer seminar was offered two years ago and focused on the curriculum that I developed and taught to freshmen English classes for five years, called “Elements of Fiction.”  Sessions are focused on improving reading skills through exploring short stories (setting, theme, characterization, point of view, and plot) and then practicing analytical writing tools (brainstorming, organization of ideas, development of thesis statement, transitions, expression of voice).  Students increase academic confidence through both small group interaction and individualized support in a wonderful, supportive space.

High School Afternoon Group:  Film Analysis Class, 12pm-3:30/4pm, M-Th in July

Through the lens of film, students will build critical thinking and writing skills in a fun forum of analyzing film.  Participants will analyze one classic reel at our studio in the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture and then the class will visit a different theater in the city each week to view a current movie release.  Students will have a vote in film selections and learn to express their unique voice in movie reviews that reinforce the essential skills of effective writing through innovative critiques.

These groups have been between 6-8 students and are quite affordable, with monthly tuition of just $25 a day.  Please contact me for more information–I’ll be happy to visit with you and/or referrals about our summer programs in the past.

*In addition to tuition for the seminars, there will be a $50 registration fee upon signing up for a program.
